What are my goals for this project?
One of the skills I would like to develop more and be able to showcase is Narrative Design and World Design. I am interested in this as many of my previous roles in projects have been in technical roles, so I think it would be interesting to do something self-contained and simple but creative.
How do I intend to accomplish that goal?
The format for the game will be the same as some of the earliest computer RPG’s with simple controls for walking NSEW, picking up objects and talking to NPC’s to solve puzzles and move forward. By working through the complexity of this game I hope to improve my skills at visualizing the greater narrative of games I may design and become a better writer through it. One of the mechanics I hope to leverage towards this goal is the way in which Twine lets you hyperlink actions in the line of text. By using this tool I can focus on what is actually written in text and allow the user to interact with the text directly instead of having to implement specific interaction handles.
Scope?
The goal for this coming week is a dozen or so rooms with each room containing a clue, puzzle piece, or puzzle needed to progress and ultimately finish the game. The amount of time the player spends in each room and walking between rooms trying to solve the puzzles will comprise a majority of the play time. This time spent will be capped by a system in the game that will automatically end the game if the player takes too long (walks between too many rooms). As the player travels between rooms they will advance the clock, this will incentivize the player to think carefully before walking about too much.
Hopefully within these limitations I will be able to create something that is both interesting and helps me grow as a writer.
